Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This Victorian washstand or console table is a 19th-century English piece constructed from dark brown mahogany and white Carrara marble. The table incorporates a heavy marble top with an integrated rear and side upstand gallery, two frieze drawers fitted with small round wooden knobs, and stoutly turned legs ending in small brass castors. The warm, deep-toned timber shows a polished grain across the drawer fronts and structural frame, contrasting cleanly against the pale veined marble surface. Measuring 97 cm high, 100 cm wide and 60 cm deep, the unit stands at a practical height for daily use. Today, this adaptable furniture piece functions effectively as a hall console, a side table in a bedroom, or a functional washstand within a bathroom setting.

FAQs

Originally designed for bedrooms and dressing rooms before modern indoor plumbing, Victorian washstands provided a dedicated surface for a water pitcher, basin, and grooming accessories.

These pieces typically feature solid mahogany or oak frames, dovetailed wooden drawers, brass castors, and durable white Carrara or grey-veined marble surfaces with protective splashbacks.

Authentic period examples display hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer construction, hand-turned timber legs, period-correct brass castors, and natural age-related wear to the wood finish and marble underside.

A marble-top washstand functions effectively as a hallway console table, a bathroom vanity unit adapted for a modern basin, or an occasional side table in a dining room.

Clean the marble using pH-neutral soap and water, avoiding acidic solutions, and nourish the mahogany woodwork regularly with natural beeswax paste to maintain the timber finish.
