FAQs

An antique settle is a high-backed wooden bench, frequently constructed with built-in storage beneath the seat and solid armrests. Originating in early modern Europe and widely produced throughout the eighteenth century in Britain, these pieces were designed to shield occupants from cold draughts in country homes and halls.

Eighteenth-century settles were predominantly crafted from solid English oak using mortise and tenon joinery secured with wooden pegs. The structure typically features panelled backrests, shaped supportive armrests, and box base framing with hand-planed panels.

Authentic eighteenth-century settles exhibit hand-sawn timber marks, irregular peg placement around joinery, and natural wear patterns on the seat and armrests. Look for dark patination in recesses, hand-forged iron hinges or fixings, and fielded or recessed panel moulding characteristic of the period.

Place the settle in a hall, entryway, or wide corridor to create a functional focal point that provides seating and storage. Contrast the dark timber with neutral walls, natural linen cushions, or textured wool throws to soften the heavy wood aesthetic while retaining a traditional silhouette.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the rich patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent warping, shrinkage, or splitting of the solid oak panels.
