FAQs

A hall settle is a high-backed wooden bench that originated in medieval Europe to protect sitters from cold drafts. Over time, these pieces evolved to include carved back panels and integrated storage compartments beneath the seat, serving as functional entryway furniture.

These settles are constructed from solid oak timber using mortise and tenon joinery. Decorative relief carving is applied to the back panels and cresting, while the base features a heavy frame housing a hinged lid opening to a storage chest.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age such as natural shrinkage across wide timber panels, soft wear along raised carved areas, authentic iron hinges, and hand-planed surface irregularities rather than uniform modern machine marks.

Place the settle in a hallway, entryway, or dining area to provide functional seating and storage. Soften the dark timber and heavy proportions by layering with neutral linen cushions or woven wool throws.

Dust regularly using a dry, lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood and maintain its deep patina. Avoid placing the item directly adjacent to high heat sources to prevent timber warping.
