Description

Antique Austrian Cold-Painted Bronze Lizard Sculpture – Manner of Franz Bergman

Brief Description:

This is a truly incredible quality late 19th/early 20th-century Austrian cold-painted bronze sculpture depicting a wonderfully lifelike lizard, modelled in the manner of the celebrated Viennese bronze artist Franz Bergman (1861–1936).

This unusual and beautifully detailed antique bronze captures the reptile in a remarkably naturalistic pose, with its head raised, four outstretched legs and an exceptionally long, sweeping tail.

The quality of the modelling is particularly impressive, featuring intricately textured scales, carefully defined facial features and individually sculpted toes.

The wonderful cold-painted decoration combines mottled olive-green, yellow, earthy brown and subtle blue tones, creating a remarkably realistic appearance.

The underside bears a GESCHÜTZT (protected design) stamp, together with a small additional manufacturer's-style mark.

An excellent example of the naturalistic animal sculptures associated with the Viennese cold-painted bronze tradition, and a particularly appealing piece for collectors of antique bronzes, reptiles and unusual decorative art.

This late nineteenth or early twentieth-century Austrian cold-painted bronze sculpture depicts a realistic lizard in the manner of Franz Bergman. Modelled in the Viennese cold-painted bronze style, the piece displays a naturalistic polychrome finish combining mottled olive-green, earthy brown, yellow, and blue tones over textured scales. The sculpture captures the reptile with a raised head, four splayed legs with individually sculpted toes, and an exceptionally long, curved tail. The surface exhibits an aged patina with areas of rubbing and minor paint losses consistent with age, and the underside bears a GESCHÜTZT stamp and an additional manufacturer mark. Measuring 6.8 cm high, 21.5 cm wide, and 18.2 cm deep, it suits a collector of Viennese bronzes or animal sculptures. In a home today, it serves as a decorative object placed upon an office desk in a gentleman library.

Cold-painted bronzes originated in Vienna, Austria, during the late nineteenth century, led by renowned foundries such as Franz Xaver Bergman. These decorative pieces became popular across Europe for their realistic animal depictions, Orientalist figures, and detailed craftsmanship.

These sculptures were cast in bronze using lost-wax or sand-casting techniques, after which artists applied several layers of unfired oil paint or enamel pigments directly onto the cold metal. This process allowed for intricate colour variation and texture without high-temperature firing.

Authentic nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Viennese bronzes feature exceptionally fine casting detail, distinct surface texturing, and naturally worn polychrome paint layerings, often accompanied by foundry marks or urn stamps.

Naturalist bronze sculptures function well as accent pieces on bookshelves, executive desks, or sideboard tops, pairing effectively with dark timber, leather-bound books, and brass decor.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush to prevent disturbing delicate paint layers. Avoid water, chemical solvents, or abrasive polishing cloths, as moisture and friction can strip unfired pigments from the bronze surface.
