Mid-century Male Life Study by Patricia F. Arnett, Signed and Dated 1943.

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Earl and Rymer
Description

An evocative mid-century male life study by artist Patricia F. Arnett, dated 1943.

Rendered in oil on canvas, this striking composition features a seated male model in profile, captured with refined anatomical precision. This piece is characteristic of mid-20th-century British figurative painting.

Intriguingly, the reverse side reveals a second, earlier oil painting featuring figures bending over a table or surface—a classic example of a recycled canvas, offering a fascinating glimpse into the artist's studio process.

Patricia F. Arnett (1923–2022) was an English figurative and mural artist born in West Bromwich. She received her initial art education at The Memorial School of Art in West Bromwich before earning a place at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in London. A talented student, she was awarded the Richardson Scholarship at the University of London and gained a reputation for her strong drawing technique and figurative design skills.

Exhibiting with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists (RBSA) from 1943, Arnett was an active figure in the mid-century British art scene. Her early works from the 1940s—such as this 1943 life study—demonstrate academic rigor, anatomical clarity, and atmospheric restraint. Later in her career, she broadened her style toward vibrant expressionism and decorative abstractions, exhibiting extensively across the Midlands.

This mid-century male life study by Patricia F. Arnett is an oil painting on canvas dated 1943, created in the mid-century figurative style. The composition depicts a seated male model in profile against a warm brown backdrop, with a green drape, a red curtain, and a white block underfoot. The reverse side reveals a second, earlier oil painting featuring figures bending over a table. The piece measures 77 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 2 cm deep. Positioned above a sideboard, the painting suits a gentleman's library or study. Patricia F. Arnett was an English figurative and mural artist born in West Bromwich who studied at The Memorial School of Art and the Slade School of Fine Art. She exhibited with the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists from 1943, gaining recognition for academic rigor and anatomical clarity.

A mid-century life study is a figurative artwork produced by an artist observing a live model to analyse form, musculature, and light. During the mid-twentieth century, art academies emphasised these studies to refine observational technique and anatomical precision.

Artists during this era predominantly worked with oil paints applied to stretched flax or cotton canvas. Pigments were typically mixed with linseed oil and turpentine, layered over a gesso ground prepared on wooden stretcher frames.

Authentic works from this period generally display age-appropriate craquelure, natural canvas discolouration on the reverse, and period-correct wood stretchers. Signatures, dates, and gallery or studio inscriptions on the front or stretcher bars further assist authentication.

Figurative paintings make striking focal points when positioned above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a gallery wall. Pairing muted mid-century portraiture with rich wood tones, bronze accents, and contemporary neutral backdrops creates a refined, curated aesthetic.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, radiator heat, and high humidity to prevent cracking or warping. Dust the surface gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, and avoid applying commercial liquid cleaners or water directly to the paint surface.
