This large 19th century Chinoiserie temple pediment is an elaborate architectural wall carving made from elm with a red lacquer and gold leaf finish. The piece displays a pierced design featuring fierce dragons at each end, mythical creatures, and a central figurative scene of relaxed musicians beneath a roof structure, surmounted by a circular aperture. Visible details include intricate relief carving, warm red and gold polychrome colouring, aged timber warping, and a mellow patina. Measuring 60 cm high, 220 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, this maximalist decorative element is designed for display mounted above a large doorway or as a statement wall hanging in a living room, hallway, or dining space.

An antique Chinese temple pediment is an ornate decorative architectural timber element traditionally placed above lintels, doorways, or shrines. These panels feature deep relief carving depicting figures, dragons, and mythological scenes, often finished with red lacquer and gold leaf detailing.

Traditional Chinese architectural carvings were typically executed in dense native softwoods or hardwoods such as camphorwood, pine, or elm. The surface decoration usually comprised layers of natural lacquer, red vermilion pigment, and applied gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-carved tool marks, pierced undercut relief depth, and genuine wear on high points. Look for natural lacquer craquelure, subtle oxidisation of pigments, and evidence of historic mounting methods on the reverse.

These decorative structural elements can be wall-mounted as focal artworks above console tables, credenzas, or door frames. The combination of red lacquer and gilded accents contrasts effectively against neutral, dark, or textured wall surfaces.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre brush or feather duster, avoiding liquids or chemical detergents that compromise water-gilded surfaces. Maintain stable humidity levels to prevent timber movement, shrinkage, or lacquer flaking.
