This framed cartoon watercolour artwork depicts a gentleman in profile driving a red and black vintage motorcar with spoked wheels. Dating from 1930, the piece combines paper, watercolour, glass, and wood, styled as a vintage motoring illustration within a gentleman's library design vibe. The composition includes a square black timber frame enclosing a light background paper, a bright red upper cabin structure, black lower bodywork panels, and grey wire spoked wheels. The dimensions measure 45 cm high, 42 cm wide, and 3 cm deep. Placed today on a narrow wall space in a home, the artwork brings colour and character to a study, hallway, or living area.

FAQs

Motoring caricatures became popular in the early twentieth century alongside the rapid rise of the automobile. Artists used humour and exaggerated proportions to capture the novelty, mechanics, and distinct personalities associated with early motoring culture.

Illustrators typically worked with transparent watercolour washes and fine ink or gouache detailing on heavy cotton-rag paper or illustrators board. These were subsequently mounted behind glass within timber frames to preserve the delicate pigments.

Original watercolours display visible brush stroke variation, pigment pooling, and textured paper fibers under magnification. Printed reproductions feature half-tone dot patterns or uniform mechanical ink layers across the surface.

Framed caricature artwork works exceptionally well when grouped into a gallery wall or positioned in dedicated spaces such as home offices, hallways, or libraries. Pairing bold illustrations with dark timber paneling or neutral paint coats adds visual contrast.

Watercolour paintings must be kept away from direct sunlight and high-humidity areas to prevent fading and foxing. Using acid-free mounting boards and UV-protective glazing ensures long-term preservation of the paper and pigments.
