Nineteenth-century oil painting encompasses various movements from academic realism to early impressionism, often focusing on narrative scenes, landscapes, and portraits rendered with refined brushwork.

These works typically utilise oil pigments applied to prepared wooden panels, such as mahogany or oak, often housed within ornate gesso and gilded wood frames.

Authentication involves examining the canvas or panel for age-related craquelure, inspecting artist signatures, analysing pigment composition under ultraviolet light, and reviewing provenance records.

An antique painting serves as a focal point when hung against neutral walls with directional picture lighting, bridging traditional craftsmanship with contemporary decor schemes.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth.
