The animalier movement emerged in 19th-century France, focusing on the realistic and dynamic portrayal of animals, particularly horses and wild beasts, by sculptors such as Isidore Jules Bonheur.

Most 19th-century bronzes were cast using the lost-wax method, followed by hand-chasing and the application of various chemical patinas to achieve colour depth.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit crisp foundry markings, artist signatures, a multi-layered patination rather than uniform paint, and weight consistent with solid or heavy-gauge bronze casting.

Such sculptural works function well as focal points on sturdy surfaces like large sideboards, executive desks, or dedicated plinths, pairing effectively with natural materials such as dark wood and leather.

Preservation requires dusting with a soft, dry brush and occasionally applying microcrystalline wax to protect the patina from atmospheric moisture; abrasive cleaners or water should be avoided.
