Artist Biography

We believe this work to have done by James Fenton (1820–1901) Although the date on the rear of the canvas is dated after his death we believe this was likely added posthumously. He was a British Victorian painter known for his finely observed genre and narrative scenes, often depicting moments of domestic life with subtle storytelling and emotional depth. He exhibited during the mid-to-late 19th century and is associated with the broader tradition of Victorian realism, where attention to atmosphere, character, and setting were central to the work.

While Fenton’s best-known paintings typically focus on interior scenes and human narratives, works attributed to him also include landscape studies that share a similar sensitivity to mood and composition. His paintings reflect the Victorian fascination with everyday life, often elevated through careful detail and tonal harmony.

Today, Fenton’s works are collected for their period authenticity, craftsmanship, and strong decorative appeal, particularly when housed in original or period-style frames.

Winter Landscape with Horses A beautifully atmospheric winter scene depicting a rural farmstead under snowfall, with a small group of horses gathered beside a cart. The composition draws the eye through soft tracks in the snow toward the central figures, while the warm tones of the farmhouse contrast gently against the cold, muted landscape.

The painting captures a quiet, almost timeless rural moment — the stillness of winter, the presence of working animals, and the subdued palette characteristic of late Victorian landscape painting. The delicate handling of snow and sky gives the piece a calm, contemplative quality, making it both visually engaging and highly decorative.

Approximate age of artwork: Late 19th Century (circa 1880–1900) Inscribed 1905 verso

Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Housed in an ornate gilt frame, which complements the period and presentation (included free of charge)

Condition Report: The painting is in good antique condition, showing age-related wear consistent with its period. There is light surface craquelure and minor marks, along with some gentle surface wear and visible patch repairs verso. The frame has visible wear, losses, and signs of age but remains structurally sound and presents well.
