Cold painted bronze refers to bronze sculptures that are painted with layers of cold enamel rather than fired in a kiln. The technique gained immense popularity in Vienna, Austria, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, championed by foundries such as Bergman.

These pieces were typically crafted using the lost-wax casting method for the bronze base, followed by meticulous hand-chasing to define texture and detail. The paint applied was a mixture of oil and enamel paints, applied without subsequent heat firing.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic age-related wear to the painted surface, revealing the bronze or brass base underneath. Look for foundry marks, artist ciphers, or the Geschutzt stamp, which denotes Austrian copyright protection.

These small sculptures add character and historical weight when styled on bookshelves, mantelpieces, or office desks. They complement both traditional study spaces and minimalist contemporary rooms as curated focal points.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and moisture to prevent paint fading and flaking. Dust gently with a soft, dry brush and avoid all liquid cleaning agents or polishes which will strip the delicate cold enamel.
