This antique Victorian Staffordshire Toby Jug takes the sculptural form of a seated spaniel dog, dating from 1860 in the English Country House style. Cast in earthenware and finished with a glossy ceramic glaze, the piece displays a hand-painted red and white coat alongside a gold lustre collar and padlock detail. The white body features dark patches on the head and ears, expressive yellow eyes, and upright front paws resting against the chest. The dog stands 22.5 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 12 cm deep. Suited for display on a mantelpiece, the jug adds traditional character to a living room or study shelf today.

A Staffordshire spaniel jug is a figural earthenware pitcher produced in Staffordshire, England, during the nineteenth century, moulded in the form of a seated spaniel.

These vessels were crafted from press-moulded earthenware pottery, decorated using hand-painted enamel colours and underglaze details, and sealed with a clear lead glaze.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces display hand-applied paintwork, small moulding variations, unglazed bases showing aged pottery, and fine glaze crazing consistent with era production.

Display the vessel on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or open bookcase to add historical texture and character to modern or traditional interior schemes.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth and clean carefully using lukewarm water with mild detergent, avoiding complete immersion or harsh abrasive chemical cleaners.
