Kidney-shaped tables emerged during the 18th century in France, gaining popularity through the craftsmanship of ebenistes who favored serpentine and asymmetric curves to enhance functional elegance in boudoirs and salons.

These tables are traditionally constructed using hardwoods such as walnut, mahogany, or fruitwoods, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, brass or bronze hardware, and fine veneers applied to solid timber frames.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, hand-forged or cast metal fittings, natural timber shrinkage, and signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and wear within the internal construction and drawer linings.

Place the table beside a sofa or in an empty corner as an accent piece, styling the surface with minimal modern objects or a simple lamp to create a balanced contrast between historical form and modern aesthetics.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and occasionally applying appropriate natural waxes to nourish the wood grain.
