These Qing dynasty stands comprise a matched pair of Chinese hongmu hardwood furniture pieces from 1880, designed with square tops housing inset floating panels, straight square legs, and humpback stretchers held by traditional mortise and tenon joinery. The timber displays a rich dark brown colour with a glossy finish and natural wood grain variation across the surfaces, while the legs terminate simply on the floor without carved feet or castors. Each stand measures 51 cm high, 41 cm wide, and 41 cm deep. They work well today as end tables placed at the end of a sofa in a gentleman's library or living room. The compact square proportions provide a stable surface for lamps, books, or decorative objects.

Qing Dynasty furniture features dense hardwood timber, such as hongmu, crafted with geometric symmetry, precise joinery, and functional forms refined during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Traditional Chinese furniture relies on mortise-and-tenon joinery, humpback stretchers, and floating panel tops assembled without metal fasteners, allowing natural timber expansion and contraction.

Authentic examples exhibit hand-cut joinery, original patination on untreated undersides, dense timber weight, and light wear surrounding the feet and lower stretchers.

These functional objects serve effectively as side tables alongside low-profile seating, as standalone plant pedestals, or as symmetrical accents framing an entrance.

Position hongmu items away from direct heat sources to prevent timber shrinkage, dust regularly with a dry cloth, and apply beeswax polish to maintain the original surface sheen.
