Description

Mark Senior was born in 1862 at Hanging Heaton, Dewsbury. He studied at Wakefield School of Art and later worked with Isaac Faulkner Bird in Leeds. Senior is famous for his involvement with the Staithes Group of artists who painted on the Yorkshire Coast around Whitby, Runswick Bay and Staithes. He also studied at the Slade, where he met Whistler, Philip Wilson Steer, Henry Tonks and Fred Brown introducing him to contemporary French painting. Thus his pictures have a cosmopolitan feel which equates with those of his better known contemporaries and friends. His pictures were exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1892 to 1924. Mark Senior had a range of patrons including Sam Wilson, a Leeds worsted coat manufacturer. Together with Sir George Clausen he advised Wilson in building up one of the most important collections of ‘turn of the century’ English art. This is now housed at Leeds City Art Gallery. His generosity to his fellow artists was publicly recognised by Rowland Hill…”Mark Senior was one of those men for whom everybody had a great deal of affection and he often helped his fellow painters in a practical way.”

"Interior" is a nice little oil on panel. Measuring 9"x 6" it is unsigned and has the artist's monogram on the back. It is framed giving an overall size of 14"x 12".

Impressionist works from this period typically focus on light, shadow, and domestic interior scenes with visible brushwork and a moody, atmospheric palette.

Artists commonly utilised seasoned wood panels, traditional oil pigments bound in linseed oil, and varnishes to seal and protect the paint surface.

Authentic pieces often display natural ageing characteristics such as subtle crazing in the paint, panel warping, period framing, and artist signatures or exhibition labels on the reverse.

Such works can be hung on neutral walls with dedicated picture lighting to create a focal point, pairing well with both contemporary minimalist and traditional decors.

Keep the artwork away from direct sunlight, maintain stable room temperatures and relative humidity, and avoid using chemical cleaning agents on the painted surface.
