This Victorian Chinese pedestal stand from around 1880 is constructed from dark brown hardwood and rosewood with a polished finish. The piece takes a square form standing 79 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, offering two tiers of display surfaces. The upper section features intricately carved openwork aprons with floral and bird motifs and detailed carved spandrels supporting the corners. A secondary square shelf is positioned below the main top, held within a frame adorned with carved scroll patterns along the lower edge. Four straight legs descend to carved claw-style feet at the base, providing a stable footing. In a contemporary home, this stand suits placement in an empty corner, a hallway, or a gentleman's library. The versatile surface area serves well for displaying small decorative items, table lamps, or house plants. The sturdy construction ensures reliable daily use for ornament display in any living space or study.

Late Qing dynasty pedestals and plant stands were designed primarily for displaying bonsai trees, ceramics, and bronze vessels. They feature structured geometric silhouettes, carved aprons, floating panel tops, and lower tiers or shelves for added stability and utility.

Dense tropical hardwoods such as hongmu, zitan, and chicken-wing wood (jichimu) were predominantly utilised. These dense woods allowed craftsmen to execute intricate relief carving and precise mortise-and-tenon joinery without relying on nails or glue.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display traditional joinery techniques, subtle hand-carving irregularities, and a natural surface patina developed over time. The substantial weight of the dense hardwood and original wear marks on the lower stretchers and feet also indicate age.

Position the pedestal as a functional accent piece in an hallway, reading nook, or living room corner. Use it to elevate contemporary sculpture, a leafy houseplant, or a modern ceramic vase to contrast rich dark timber with light modern decor.

Dust regularly using a dry, lint-free microfiber cloth. Protect the timber from extreme changes in humidity and direct sunlight to prevent shrinkage, and apply a thin layer of natural beeswax annually to preserve the finish.
