Georgian Rare Small Gadrooned Coin Jug

18th century
Description

This is a rare, small, English, Georgian, gadrooned coin jug dating from the late 18th century, c1780.

The jug is in damaged condition. It shows age related wear and tear to both the rim of the bowl and to the rim of the foot.

The jug has a baluster-shaped bowl measuring 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) by 6.4 cm. (2.5 inches) across at the rim. The bowl is decorated with trailing to the top and with gadrooning to the lower quarter above which sits a single trailed band. The strap handle was first applied to the top of the bowl and then to the bottom where it ends with a well-formed curlicue. The small domed foot measures 7.2 cm (2.9 inches) in diameter and has an embedded George III Maundy penny dated 1784 at its apex. The jug is 12.5 cm (5 inches) in height. There is a long internal crack running around the top of the foot and bottom of the bowl that extends to about half the circumference at that point. There is a 10 mm bruise to the edge of the foot which also has a couple of small burst bubbles and one long unburst bubble. There are a couple of tiny unburst bubbles in the metal of the bowl. There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other obvious evidence of restoration.

It is made from English lead metal weighing in at 230 g. (~ 8 oz.).

This eighteenth century Georgian coin jug is a small lead glass vessel in clear colour with a baluster shaped bowl and a flared pedestal foot. The decorative elements include trailed lines around the rim, a single trailed band above the lower section, gadrooned moulding on the lower body, and a strap handle ending in a lower curlicue. The surface shows age related wear and tear to the rims of the bowl and foot, a long internal crack running around the bottom of the bowl and top of the foot for about half the circumference, a 10 mm bruise on the edge of the foot, and small burst and unburst bubbles in the metal. The base contains an embedded George III Maundy penny dated 1784 at its apex. The jug stands 12.5 cm high, 7.2 cm wide, and 7.2 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this piece serves as a decorative display item in an English country house interior. The small scale suits placement alongside other tabletop items or within a glass fronted cabinet for closer inspection of the historic coin embedded in the pedestal base. The clear material reflects surrounding light while displaying the interior details and the internal crack clearly. Handling requires care due to the recorded damage along the foot and bowl rims.

A Georgian gadrooned glass jug is an 18th-century hand-blown lead glass vessel characterised by convex moulding or fluting, known as gadrooning, around its lower bowl.

These vessels were hand-blown using English lead glass, known for its high refractive index and weight, featuring applied handles and hand-tooled rims or spouts.

Authentic pieces generally feature a snapped or polished pontil mark on the base, slight inclusions or air seeds within the glass fabric, and subtle wear on the contact points of the foot rim.

Georgian glass vessels can be styled on dining sideboards, open shelving, or deep window sills where natural light highlights the internal refractions and gadrooned moulding.

Wash by hand in lukewarm water using mild washing-up liquid and dry immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth, avoiding dishwashers and sudden temperature changes.
