The Meiji period (1868-1912) marked a major opening of Japan to Western trade, prompting metalworkers to adapt traditional casting skills to create intricate decorative sculptures for international markets.

Craftsmen typically utilised lost-wax casting methods with high-copper alloy compositions, often applying complex chemical patination techniques to achieve varied surface tones and metallic finishes.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit heavy weight, naturalistic hand-chased surface details, age-appropriate patination, and frequently carry artisan signatures or foundry seals on the underside.

Placing a patinated metal sculpture on a stack of art books, a wooden mantelpiece, or a side table introduces textural contrast and a sense of historical curation to contemporary spaces.

Maintain antique bronzes by gently dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical polishes, which can strip the historical patina and diminish the value of the piece.
