Portrait miniatures are small-scale paintings, highly popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras, often created as tokens of remembrance or worn as jewellery.

Traditional materials include watercolour or gouache painted on ivory, vellum, card, or copper, typically housed in protective metal or wooden frames.

Authentic pieces generally display fine stippling and cross-hatching brushwork characteristic of the period, historical pigments, and period-correct framing methods without modern adhesives.

These small-scale artworks lend themselves well to gallery walls paired with contemporary frames or placed on small surfaces like mantelpieces for a curated, scholarly look.

To prevent fading and degradation, miniatures must be kept out of direct sunlight, maintained away from high humidity, and glazed with UV-protective glass where possible.
