FAQs

Mid-19th-century portraits typically feature realistic representations of subjects, often characterised by dark, moody backgrounds and attention to fabric textures, reflecting the artistic conventions of the Victorian era.

Artists of this period commonly used oil paints applied to stretched linen canvas, framed in moulded wood frames finished with gesso and gold leaf or gilt.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the canvas weave, the ageing and craquelure of the oil paint, the construction and joinery of the stretcher bars, and the composition of the frame.

An antique portrait adds depth and historical contrast when hung against dark walls in a traditional library, or used as a focal point to ground a minimalist modern living space.

Keep paintings away from direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity and temperature levels, and avoid using chemical cleaners on the canvas or gilded frame.
