This George III freestanding canterbury originates from around 1800 to 1820 and follows a gentleman's library design aesthetic. The piece is constructed from rosewood in a dark brown timber colour, featuring three slatted sections with curved partitions, turned corner posts topped with finials, a lower base drawer fitted with wooden knob handles, and turned legs terminating in brass castors. Visible details include horizontal and vertical wooden slats forming the storage compartments, turned wooden finials at each corner, and small circular wooden knobs on the drawer front. Practical in scale, it measures 56 cm high, 51 cm wide, and 37 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this item functions well placed beside the end of a sofa or in a living room to organise newspapers, magazines, or books.

A canterbury is a partition-topped stand developed in late 18th-century England, originally designed to hold sheet music or bound music volumes beside a instrument or seating area.

Georgian examples were predominantly crafted from high-grade rosewood or mahogany, featuring solid wood slat dividers, hand-turned corner posts, dovetailed drawer joints, and brass wheel castors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawer, original brass castors, natural oxidation to the timber, and distinctively turned corner posts topped with finials.

A canterbury functions as an occasional side piece beside a sofa or armchair, serving as a dedicated holder for magazines, oversized art monographs, or vinyl record collections.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, keep the piece away from direct heat sources or sunlight to prevent fading, and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally.
