A whatnot is an open-shelved multi-tiered piece of furniture designed for displaying ornaments, while a purdonium is a specialised cabinet used to store coal near a fireplace. Combining the two created a multifunctional piece that housed fuel below while providing display surfaces above.

These items were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like rosewood or mahogany, often featuring intricate marquetry or brass stringing. They incorporated turned columns, dovetailed joinery, and frequently housed an internal metal liner to hold coal safely.

Authenticity is indicated by period-appropriate hand-cut joinery, natural timber ageing, genuine brass hardware, and hand-inlaid marquetry rather than printed veneers. Inspecting the internal metal coal box and castors also helps confirm age.

This versatile item functions effectively as an eclectic bedside table or a statement piece beside a sofa. The top tiers offer ideal surfaces for curated decorative objects, small plants, or lighting, while the enclosed base provides discreet storage.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply high-quality beeswax periodically to nourish the wood grain.
