Watercolour painting in Britain during the late nineteenth century was characterised by a strong emphasis on plein-air observation, atmospheric effects, and capturing local topographical features, often influenced by the watercolour societies of the period.

Authentic period watercolours were typically executed using gum arabic-based pigments applied to heavyweight rag paper or watercolour boards, frequently utilising cotton or linen fibres for longevity.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper stock for period watermarks, inspecting the pigments for age-appropriate oxidisation and fading, verifying signature characteristics, and checking for period framing and backing materials.

An antique watercolour brings historic depth to a room when framed in traditional wood or gilded moulding and displayed on a neutral wall away from direct sunlight, pairing well with both classic and minimalist furnishings.

Preservation requires framing under UV-filtering glass or acrylic, maintaining stable relative humidity and temperature levels, and avoiding exposure to direct sunlight or high-intensity artificial lighting to prevent pigment fading.
