Description

This charming mid-19th-century German oil painting depicts a young woman wearing a large pink necktie atop a black bodice.

The 1850s were a period of severe political unrest in the German states following the revolutions of 1848-1849. Droves of citizens emigrated, with many heading for the USA amid growing tensions. Yet, look upon the tender expression of this delightful lady, painted in 1853, and little would you know. There’s a resilient spirit behind the sunken hazel eyes and amiable smile.

Her hairstyle is particularly interesting as it features a double parting, which was an occasional preference for women during the early part of this decade.

The painting is signed Jacobi 1853 but the artist can’t be identified. Jacobi is a surname of German origin.

Signed in the lower right and held within a later frame.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 25½” x 30” /65 cm x 76cm

Year of creation: 1853

Provenance: Private collection, Sweden.

Condition: Cleaned. Revarnished. Canvas relined. Craquelure throughout. The paint layer is stable. Historic repairs with areas of in-painting. Frame with various marks and showing its age.

Nineteenth-century portraiture frequently combined academic realism with psychological depth, capturing the subjects likeness and social standing through meticulous brushwork and chiaroscuro lighting.

Traditional works typically feature oil paints applied to stretched linen canvas or wooden panels, housed within handcrafted wooden frames finished with gesso and gilt.

Authenticity is determined by examining the canvas weave, the composition of the oil pigments under magnification, age-related craquelure, and the construction methods of the accompanying wooden stretcher and frame.

An antique portrait provides a striking focal point when contrasted against minimalist contemporary walls or paired with transitional furnishings to create layered visual interest.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, and cleaning only with specialized conservation techniques.
