A netsuke is a small carved toggle historically used in traditional Japanese dress to secure small containers, such as inro or pouch cords, suspended from the sash.

While boxwood and other dense hardwoods are common, netsuke were also traditionally carved from ivory, bone, porcelain, and various metals.

Authentic period pieces typically feature natural age patina, wear patterns around the himotoshi cord holes, and hand-carved tool marks characteristic of historical craftsmanship rather than modern machine production.

These small sculptural objects work exceptionally well when placed in glass display cabinets, on open bookshelves, or on mantels where their fine detail can be closely observed.

Keep boxwood carvings away from direct sunlight, extreme temperature fluctuations, and high humidity to prevent wood splitting, and clean gently with a soft, dry brush.
