Description

This fine mid-19th-century Austrian oil painting depicts a seated gentleman wearing a black coat with a white shirt, waistcoat, stock and pinky ring.

During the 1840s, male fashion underwent a significant shift towards elegance and refinement. In the previous decade, gentlemen dressed somewhat akin to a fanciful hourglass, tucked in at the middle, with flared shoulders and coats. But ten years on and the silhouette had transformed considerably into a sharp narrow line - respectable and fitted. Gone too were the lavish colours, replaced by skilfully tailored monochromatic suits.

The identity of this dapper gent is unknown but he’s probably Austrian given the ‘Wien’ inscription in the lower left.

Signed illegibly/dated and held within a splendid gilt frame, which is probably original.

Medium: Oil on canvas

Overall size: 23½” x 29” / 62cm x 74cm

Year of creation: 1840

Provenance: Private collection, south Germany.

Condition: Cleaned. Canvas relined. Later stretcher. Craquelure throughout. The paint layer is stable. Frame with various marks and showing its age.

Our reference: BRV1901

Date of Manufacture

Brave Fine Art has dated this Antique Oil Painting to the 19th Century.

Nineteenth-century European portraiture often focused on realistic representations of subjects, capturing individual likenesses and social status through detailed attire and formal composition.

These works typically utilised oil paint applied to stretched linen or canvas, housed within hand-carved and gilded wooden frames.

Authenticity is assessed by examining canvas ageing, craquelure patterns in the paint layer, stretcher frame construction, and artist signatures or historic labels on the reverse.

Antique portraits provide focal points in contemporary spaces when paired with minimalist surroundings, creating a balanced contrast between historical depth and modern simplicity.

Preservation requires maintaining stable temperature and humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent fading, and dusting gently with a soft, dry brush without chemical cleaners.
