A ships barometer is a meteorological instrument traditionally used at sea to measure atmospheric pressure and predict weather changes, housed in a robust case designed to withstand maritime conditions.

These instruments commonly featured solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or rosewood, combined with brass bezels, silvered brass dials, and protective glass faces.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining the quality of the timber, hand-engraved or silvered dial markings, maker signatures, and the appropriate mechanical construction consistent with nineteenth-century craftsmanship.

A vintage barometer can be mounted as a focal point on a hallway wall or integrated into a study or library gallery wall to introduce historical character and nautical texture.

Preservation involves keeping the instrument away from direct sunlight and fluctuating heat sources, occasionally cleaning the wood with a dry microfibre cloth, and avoiding harsh chemical polishes.
