These nineteenth-century Black Forest huntsmen figures consist of a pair of pottery earthenware statues depicting bearded gentlemen in period attire. Rendered in a light brown colour, the figures show detailed carving of facial expressions, clothing, walking sticks, and quarry, including a hare held aloft and a stag resting on a moulded base. Each statue bears the signature “L&C 202” on the round black plinth. The terracotta figures measure 51 cm high, 18 cm wide, and 18 cm deep. Such ornamental pieces suit placement on a mantelpiece within a highland hunting lodge style interior. The earthen sculptures bring traditional character to a room, functioning as decorative focal points on a shelf or sideboard. Collectors of nineteenth-century pottery figures will find the fine detailing and naturalistic subjects complement traditional display settings. The durable earthenware construction allows for stable placement in domestic spaces.

FAQs

Black Forest decorative items originated in Switzerland and South Germany during the 19th century, traditionally featuring rural figures, wildlife, and hunting motifs.

These figures are crafted from terracotta or unglazed earthenware ceramic, moulded and hand-detailed to imitate traditional wood carvings before firing.

Authentic period examples display crisp moulding details, natural earthenware firing variations, impressed makers marks or numbers on the base, and age-consistent surface wear.

Position the pair symmetrically on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or within a bookshelf to add texture, historical narrative, and warmth to a contemporary interior scheme.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners or immersion in water, which can damage unglazed ceramic surfaces.
