Why do so many dresser bases have no top half?

Two reasons run through the listings. Many were made as low dressers in their own right, finished pieces with no rack ever intended above them. Others were part of a full dresser and lost the shelved rack somewhere along the way. Either way, they're sold as freestanding sideboards and servers rather than as halves waiting to be completed.

What wood are they usually made from?

Oak, in well over half the titles on Sellingantiques. Nothing else comes close. Pine follows, often stripped or painted, and concentrated in the lower and middle of the range. Beyond those two the archive turns up elm, walnut, chestnut, cherry and cherrywood, fruitwood, sycamore, pitch pine, ash, teak and a single rosewood.

How wide do dresser bases get?

Width is where the category stretches furthest. At one end sit titles calling a piece small, narrow or unusually small, including one at 124cm. At the other are 5-foot and 7ft examples and an exceptionally large Montgomeryshire base. "Small" appears in 87 titles and "large" in 81, so the two ends are almost evenly matched.

Are Welsh dresser bases a distinct group?

Welsh appears in 152 titles, and Welsh oak in a further batch, so it's a well populated strand of the category. Regional naming within Wales gets precise: Montgomeryshire, Anglesey, the Conwy Valley, Glamorganshire, North and South Wales. Spice drawers, a bank of small drawers, are noted on two Welsh oak bases.

Do any carry a maker's name?

No. A scan of the whole archive for maker candidates returned nothing, so these are anonymous country pieces. What listings name instead is region, timber and period. That's the identifying information the trade works with in this category.

Which periods turn up most often?

Eighteenth century leads, with 362 titles using "18th" and 499 listings filed under that era. Georgian appears in 283 titles and George III in 114. Nineteenth-century pieces follow, then a thinner run of 17th-century oak. At the late end sit 1920s and 1930s sideboard and Jacobean revival forms, a small but steady tail.
