Are Edwardian dressers usually oak?

Oak is the defining timber. It appears in twenty-eight of the forty titles in the archive, and it carries the highest-priced pieces. Pine is the only other timber named with any frequency, in eight titles, several of them painted or distressed. Mahogany appears exactly once.

Does a dresser always come with a plate rack?

No. Only a fifth of titles state that a rack is present, so the tall open superstructure that defines the form in the popular imagination is the exception in dealer copy rather than the rule. The rest are offered as single-part pieces or as bases. 'Dresser Base' appears twice, alongside 'sideboard dresser', 'Cabinet Dresser' and 'serving table' for the low half on its own.

What does Arts and Crafts mean in these listings?

It is the design idiom applied to about a fifth of the group, usually plain oak with visible construction, and those listings sit toward the top of the range. Some name a design house outright. Others are hedged as 'attributed' or 'in the style of', and one is described as labelled.

How many Edwardian dressers come up for sale?

It is a small, slow category. Around three come to market a year on Sellingantiques. Twenty-seven different dealers have listed them across the archive, close to one dealer per listing, so almost nobody carries them in depth.

Why do some say Welsh dresser?

'Welsh' turns up three times in the titles as trade shorthand for the full form with a tall open rack. 'Farmhouse' and 'cottage' each appear once, doing much the same job. None of these words establishes where a piece was made. No county, town or workshop is given anywhere in the evidence.

How firm are the Edwardian dates?

Loose. Only sixteen of the forty listings carry a clean year, and the dated field runs from 1890 to 1930. The rest rely on the word 'Edwardian' alone, and titles and dates disagree at the edges, with Victorian and early twentieth century pieces sitting inside the same heading.
