Can I use the drawers for heavy tools?

Most of these chests handle light weight well. The drawer bottoms are often thin boards of cedar or ash meant for papers and small collectables. They aren't built for heavy loads. If you fill them with metal tools, the bases will bow and the runners will grind down faster, making the drawers stiff and difficult to pull out.

My grandfather left me one of these tall chests but the key is missing and that flap on the side is locked tight, so is there a way to open it without breaking the wood?

A locksmith can pick the lock or cut a new key without damaging the timber. The locks on an antique Wellington chest are standard lever mechanisms and rarely present a challenge to a professional. Avoid trying to force the hinged stile with a screwdriver. The brass lock sits deep in the carcase, and prying the wood will just splinter the mahogany veneer along the edge.

How do you move a tall chest safely?

Take all the drawers out first. The empty carcase is light enough for one person to lift easily. Lock the empty chest or tie the hinged stile shut before moving it. If the stile swings open while you carry the frame, it can snap the brass hinges or crack the timber.

I have noticed that a lot of them have a top drawer that looks like two regular drawers from the outside but it actually drops down like a desk, was this normal?
