Joseph Emanuel Weiser (Paszków 1847 - Munich 1911) - German painter; studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1864-1865 and again in 1872-1876 as a student of Wilhelm von Diez. In 1887 he painted a large, dramatically expressive painting Interrupted Weddings. He was also the author of canvases with themes drawn from ancient history, such as The Last Day of Pompeii. Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

19th-century European genre painting focuses on storytelling through everyday domestic scenes, historical costume, and intimate human interactions. Artists often emphasised realistic textures, dramatic lighting, and narrative detail to engage viewers.

Paintings from this period were typically executed in oil on wood panel or stretched linen canvas. The accompanying frames were constructed from carved timber or molded composition decorated with hand-applied gold leaf over clay bole.

Authentic works often feature natural craquelure patterns in the varnish and paint layers, original artist signatures or brass attribution plaques, and evidence of hand-carved or gilded framing. Inspection of the reverse reveals aged wood panels, period labels, or historic hanging hardware.

Pairing framed fine art above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or within a gallery wall creates a focal point in both traditional and modern settings. Hanging them side-by-side at eye level highlights their narrative symmetry while adding warm metallic tones to the room.

Artworks should be kept away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Clean giltwood frames using a soft, dry brush to avoid removing gold leaf, and consult a professional conservator for cleaning aged varnish on the painted surface.
