Georgian Military Campaign Teak Chest of Drawers (George Iii)

18th century
Description

A rare and unusual, George III period, original two section military campaign chest of drawers, Circa 1800.

This early campaign chest is constructed in solid teak. With original knob handles, iron carry handles and feet.

These early versions don't feature the brass details, flush pull handles and screw off feet that are seen in later chests. These were much more rugged and often made by the shipwrights who constructed the ships these chests were sent on, rather than by cabinet makers. As such these are highly functional pieces and would have seen service, and blessed by the running repairs that a piece used in action would need.

Other than a few obvious running repairs, some period inset castors in the feet are the only obvious later addition, but even these could have been added during service.

This chest has been through our workshop, and had thorough clean and wax polish. As such is in very good condition and very much ready for use.

Dimensions:

This chest of drawers measures approximately 104.5 cm (41") tall, 103 cm (40.5") wide (106.5 cm (42") wide including the width of the carry handles), and 44.5 cm (17.5") deep (48 cm (19") deep including the depth of the knob handles).

Condition:

Please see the pictures for details of the items condition. - This chest of drawers is in a very good original condition, commensurate with its age, and is structurally very sound and sturdy. Good colour, polish and patina throughout. Some minor marks and blemishes, in keeping with age and use. A few minor sympathetic repairs, but otherwise original and unmolested. Original handles, feet, and locks. Later but period castors, inset into the feet. In good working order, very serviceable and ready to use. - As with all vintage & antique furniture there will be signs of use, marks, wear & tear, etc.
