A banjo barometer is a wheel barometer characterised by its distinctive curved, multi-dial wooden case resembling the stringed instrument, which gained widespread popularity during the late 18th and 19th centuries.

These instruments were typically constructed from solid mahogany or other hardwoods, featuring boxwood string inlay, brass bezels, convex or concave mirrors, and glass faces protecting paper or enamel dials.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved or inlaid wooden cases, handwritten maker signatures on the dial face, brass fittings with natural patina, and genuine mercury columns within the glass tubes.

Mount the instrument at eye level on a prominent focal wall within a study, hallway, or living room to serve as a functional conversation piece alongside traditional artwork.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and extreme temperature fluctuations, and consult a professional horologist or specialist restorer if the mercury column needs resetting or the case requires maintenance.
