Oil Painting - Still Life - Margaret 'Maggie' Hamilton, 1867 - 1952

19th century
Description

Here is a still life oil painting by the renowned Scottish Artist Margaret 'Maggie' Hamilton.

Set against a sumptuous teal background are a delicate lidded glass jar, a Chinese vase with gilded birds and pine cones, a shimmering drinking glass, and a silver Amethyst-set Celtic brooch on a sky-blue silk ribbon. The painting is signed in the the artists usual style, and is in the midst of the composition. In its original silver gesso frame, the picture measures 55cm by 44cm framed, the canvas being 50cm by 39.5cm.

Born in Glasgow in 1867 Hamilton is an accomplished and important artist of her time, exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Art as well as being a leading member of the Glasgow Society of Lady Artists. She was also a contemporary and associate of the Glasgow Boys, a group of Impressionists and Post impressionists who painted her portrait many times.

(There is an extremely elegant and beautiful portrait of her online by James Guthrie which I wanted to include here to illustrate her, but was unsure of the copyright - so if you like this painting, she really is worth looking up!).

The painting is in super condition, but if I can provide any further details or images, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

I offer free postage to mainland UK, and am happy to help with quotes for postage abroad.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
