Quiet Street Antiques of Bath has dated this piece to the 18th Century.
It stands on four original solid mahogany bracket feet and measures 33ins wide; 18.5ins deep and 31.5ins high. This is a good chest. c1780.

The purpose of a “Brushing Slide” which is found in better quality 18th and early 19th century chests, was to provide a surface to brush dust and powder from ones jacket. It was the fashion to wear wigs, which were kept clean (and perfumed) with powder ~ much of which ended up deposited on the shoulders of jackets and coats!
