This African Benin bronze horseman statue originates from 1930 and follows the African Tribal Art style. The cast metal sculpture depicts an equestrian warrior figure riding a decorated horse, holding reins in one hand and an upright blade in the other. It displays patterned armour details, a lost-wax texture, and stands on a rectangular plinth base with geometric side carvings. The warm bronze metal has developed a polished patina with varied golden brown highlights across the surface of the rider, animal, and base. The piece measures 37 cm high, 33 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. It functions effectively as a decorative display object placed upon a sideboard top within a gentleman's library or a study interior.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft cloth or dry brush, avoiding abrasive cleaning agents or polish that can strip the natural patination and surface oxidisation.

Position the sculpture as a striking focal point on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or bookshelf, pairing dark metal tones with natural wood or stone surfaces to highlight its carved details.

Authentic castings display detailed hand-carved textures, substantial weight consistent with dense metals, and natural surface patination or oxidisation rather than modern chemical finishes.

These figures were produced using the lost-wax casting technique (cire perdue), where a wax model is carved over a clay core, encased in clay mould, melted away, and replaced with molten bronze or copper alloy.

Benin bronzes are metal sculptures and plaques created by artists of the historic Benin Kingdom in West Africa, frequently depicting royal figures, warriors, and equestrian imagery symbolising authority and status.
