19th century
Description

Gustave De Breanski: A good gilt framed Oil painting on canvas by this well known 19th century artist. A beautiful mountain scene at sunrise, entitled (verso) "Morning Glow", with the hills and mountains bathed in a lovely warm sunlight. The lake in the foreground is calm and reflects the background well. The trees and bushes are typical of the Victorian style of painting. The skies and mountains are of particular note in this painting.

Signed by the artist to the bottom left hand corner and framed in a simply decorated giltwood frame. See also a handwritten title label with name and date verso.

Dimensions:  Canvas width: 62 x height: 41cm

Dated: c.1878 (see label verso)

The Artist: Gustave Adolphe De Breanski (1859-1899) was from a famous family of artists. His father and older brother (both called Alfred) were very well known and accomplished landscape artists. Gustave followed in their footsteps with landscapes, subsequently moving on to marine landscapes and coastal scenes, in particular scenes of harbours, with boats entering/leaving in calm and choppy waters.  He was a prolific artist and you will encounter many of his paintings at auction and art galleries today. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1878-1887 and was a keen supporter of the Suffolk Street galleries (Society of British Artists). His style is broader and somewhat more impressionistic than his siblings. His proficiency with colour is excellent and his composition shows an adeptness with both balance and perspective.

This Victorian oil painting on canvas by Gustave De Breanski depicts a mountainous lake view at sunrise, entitled "Morning Glow" on the reverse. The artwork shows hills and mountains bathed in warm sunlight, a calm foreground lake reflecting the background, and typical Victorian trees and bushes, with a signature visible in the bottom left-hand corner. The oil paint and canvas composition is housed within an ornate giltwood frame featuring elaborate decorative floral moulding along the outer and inner edges. Measuring 41 cm high, 62 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, the piece displays subtle surface craquelure and warm golden hues across the painted canvas and surrounding wooden frame. It is suited for placement above a mantelpiece in an English country house interior.

Victorian landscape painting frequently featured rugged natural scenery, romanticised atmospheric light, detailed topography, and dramatic depictions of lakes and mountains.

Artists utilised oil-based pigments applied directly onto stretched linen canvas, which were subsequently mounted into gilded wood or moulded gesso frames.

Authentic period paintings display natural surface craquelure, period-appropriate stretcher construction, artist signatures, and gradual oxidation on the reverse of the canvas.

Hang the artwork as a focal point above a fireplace or console table, surrounding it with minimalist furnishings to allow the detailed brushwork and gilded frame to contrast.

Display the painting away from direct sunlight, heating vents, and high humidity, cleaning the frame lightly with a soft dry brush and avoiding liquid cleaners.
