This interesting PRIMITIVE WATERCOLOUR of a well-dressed Gentleman, seated beneath a bower, bears a handwritten paper label to the back which states:
''My Grandfather W. Skinner, my Mother''s Father, Auctioneer of Chatham. Gravestone stands among the outside of the Chatham Church Yard - now a resting place''.
The painting would appear to date from around 1860 to 1880. The Auctioneer''s Directory of 1860 lists two Auctioneers named Skinner in Chatham - Skinner J. and Skinner J.T. These could be relatives of this Gentleman.
The painting is in its original, unrestored condition with, what seems to be, the original frame, mount and glass.
