Description

This evocative early 20th-century pastel by German artist Erwin Starker (1872-1938) captures a rolling view in the Neckar Valley, near Stuttgart. An impressive tumble of colours undulate across autumnal hills - culminating in a stripe of blue.

In the foreground, the lilac foliage is offset by a striking birch that leans right following years of gales. While a splash of river draws the eye down the valley and out towards the horizon.

Starker loved this area and often came here to sketch. He was born in nearby Stuttgart and spent much of his life in his hometown.

Signed in the lower left, framed and glazed.

Pastel landscapes gained significant popularity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as artists favoured the medium for capturing atmospheric light and subtle colour transitions en plein air.

These artworks typically utilise finely ground pigment sticks applied to textured paper or card, traditionally protected behind glass and housed in gilt wood frames.

Authenticity is assessed through examining paper ageing characteristics, artist signatures, framing construction, and the presence of genuine pastel dust under magnification rather than modern printing dots.

Pair the traditional gilt frame with minimalist wall colours to create a striking contrast, or group it within a curated gallery wall alongside contemporary pieces for a balanced look.

Pastels must be kept away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent pigment fading and mould growth, and they should remain sealed behind UV-filtering glass to protect the delicate surface.
