He is best known for producing dramatic marine scenes, often located on the North East coast of England. His works successfully capture the human struggle against the overwhelming power of the sea. Works frequently include rescue boats and boats in difficulty, and are seen battling the elements of sea and weather. Typical titles include Launch of the Life Boat , Storm Driven off Scarborough, and Fishing Boat in Distress. Miles found popularity among persons of coastal living, since it was their bravery and strife that he was inspired by.
