This large oil on canvas painting dates from the 1960s in the manner of the circle of Sonia Delaunay. The abstract mid-century modern composition presents geometric colour blocks in shades of dark blue, purple, dark green, and charcoal, complemented by painted curved black line arcs and small semicircular motifs. The piece shows some wear, knocks, and marks across the surface. Overall maximum dimensions measure 173 cm high by 134 cm wide by 3 cm deep. Suitable for placement above a sideboard in a modern living space or dining room, the artwork delivers a striking visual impact. The vertical format integrates easily into contemporary interiors seeking a bold mid-century accent. It hangs securely on a wall to anchor the surrounding decor with its distinct palette and abstract motifs.

FAQs

Mid-Century abstract oil paintings, particularly from the 1960s, focus on colour theory, geometric composition, and form rather than figurative representation. Influenced by movements such as Orphism and Constructivism, artists used colour blocking and rhythmic shapes to create visual balance.

During the 1960s, artists commonly used hand-stretched linen or cotton canvas secured to timber stretcher bars. High-viscosity oil paints or early synthetic acrylic pigments were applied over a prepared gesso ground layer.

Authentic mid-century paintings typically exhibit age-appropriate oxidisation on the wooden stretcher frames, natural craquelure in the paint layer, and period-accurate mounting hardware. Inspecting stencils, canvas grain, and gallery labels on the reverse provides further verification.

Large abstract canvases serve as central focal points when mounted above a sideboard or sofa in minimalist or contemporary settings. Complementing dark colour palettes with neutral wall surfaces and dedicated picture lighting enhances the depth and tones of the composition.

Preserve oil paintings by hanging them away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations. Dust gently using a dry, soft-bristled brush, and consult a professional art conservator for deep cleaning or varnish treatment.
