1920s Kays Standard Lever Pocket Watch

1920s Kays Standard Lever pocket watch.

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement, identified as being by Revue, which is working well. The watch would have been bought in as a private label piece to be sold under the retailer’s name, Kay & Co Ltd, and the movement is signed with their name.

William Kay set up Kays of Worcester in 1890. Customers bought items from handbills in a folder and initially the goods on offer were limited to jewellery, watches, clocks and household items. Eventually William’s son Jack took over the running of the business. The company continued to expand and trade successfully, becoming one of Worcester’s largest employers.

This particular movement is protected by an inner dust cover which has some scratching where a tool has probably slipped in the past.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the loop. The case is nickel. The front and sides are in good condition, the hinged case back has some unevenness.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The dial is signed and Kays have given the watch the name “Standard Lever”. Blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
