A 5-Glass Mahogany Barograph with Chart Draw

19th century
Description

This is an attractive late 19th century Barograph.

The eight day duration clock movement with original platform escapement. Contained within a brass chart drum with lid and hinged chart retaining clip.

The eight-tiered aneroid capsule stack operating the inked nib arm and having a 'Pen set' adjusting knob and arm 'off-chart' lever. Mounted upon a grained brass platform and also having an ink bottle seating tube.

Contained within a well made mahogany case of good colour and retaining its original French polish. The lift-off top cover having five substantial and bevelled glass panels and the base having a double chart drawer and wide moulded throat - the front bearing an ivorine maker's plate with the engraved inscription "PILLISCHER. OPTICAL & SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENT MAKER. NEW BOND ST. LONDON. W." Also having flat corner feet.

This is a very original example of its type and in exceptional condition. The brass components are in fine condition and the French polish to the case is original and has cleaned well. The maker, Moritz Pillischer was very successful and traded from 88 New Bond Street from 1854 until 1887.

A barograph gives you the best of both worlds - not only is it a working aneroid barometer that records the trend in ink on a weekly chart but, it is also an eight day timepiece that also indicates the day and time by the point of the nib on the chart. Barographs are an interesting and attractive addition to any home.

This barograph is in excellent condition with a full set of charts. It is in good working order but has not been overhauled by us. Any work/overhaul (with full guarantee) required will incur a further charge and can be discussed with us.

The price is for the barograph in its present and working condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
