Watercolour painting gained significant prominence in Britain during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving from a topographical recording method into a sophisticated, highly expressive fine art medium championed by dedicated societies and master artists.

Traditional watercolours typically utilise gum arabic mixed with pigment, applied to handmade rag paper or watercolour board using fine sable or hog hair brushes.

Authenticity is identified through examination of the paper watermark, oxidation patterns, pigment analysis under magnification, signature verification, and the presence of period framing materials.

An antique watercolour can be styled by pairing it with a contemporary minimalist frame to create a striking contrast, or by grouping it within a curated gallery wall alongside modern photography.

Watercolours must be protected from direct sunlight to prevent pigment fading, framed using acid-free archival mats, and kept in environments with controlled humidity and stable temperatures.
