Antique silver pocket watch, Wm Batty, Manchester

The watch has a Swiss stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the name William Batty & Sons of 9 Market Street, Manchester, the original retailer of the watch.

As well as a jeweller, William Batty (1823-1892) was a watchmaker in his own right. He completed an apprenticeship in Yorkshire and then set up his own business, listed in 1862 as being at 9 Market Place in Manchester. Eventually Batty’s two sons joined the business and by 1874 the company had several branches and were listed in trade directories as "chronometer and watch makers, gold and silversmiths, jewellers and importers of French ormolu and marble clocks".

The movement on this particular watch is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are Continental hallmarks inside both of the case backs. There is a little unevenness and marking to the back of the watch, but not too detrimental.

The glass lens is in lovely condition.

The dial is in beautiful condition with pin-set blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and an outer minute track.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
