William And Mary Marquetry Olive Oyster Chest On Stand

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: Walton House Antiques

A Fine and rare floral William and Mary marquetry Chest on Stand with olive wood oyster veneer, with box and ebony lines and decorative banding. The lower section comprises of a long single drawer above five exquisite barley twist turned columns which are joined by an oyster veneered stretcher. The base has been replaced later.

The fashion for floral marquetry was originally imported from France and was then taken up by the likes of Thomas Pistor and Gerrit Jensen, who were among the very few London craftsmen capable of supplying floral marquetry furniture of comparable quality. Given the skilled workmanship and the intricacy of the design, we can surmise that this chest on stand would have been made for a wealthy nobleman of the day over 330 years ago.
