Antique silver Longines pocket watch retailed by J W Benson, 1909.

The watch has a 15-jewel stem-winding movement, Longines calibre 18.69, which is working nicely. The serial number on the movement 2,254,202 dates it back to 1909.

The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover which is engraved with the wording, ‘By Warrant to H M The Late Queen Victoria, Examined by J W Benson, 62 & 64 Ludgate Hill, London, Swiss Made’. There is also a previous owner’s name, L G Stretch, carefully scratched in.

The watch measures 48mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is silver and there are hallmarks inside both of the case backs for London (import mark) 1909, with a sponsor’s mark for Alfred Baume… Baume & Co were sole importers of Longines watches to the UK and the Commonwealth. There is also the mark for J W Benson who, after examining the watch and ensuring it met their high standards, would have retailed it.

The acrylic lens is in lovely condition.

The dial looks good to the naked eye. If viewed closely, there is a faint hairline on the subsidiary seconds dial. Original blued steel pin-set hands.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.
