Red Flowers in a Terracotta Pot with Pigeon Lamp Modernist French Floral Still Life Oil on Canvas

1940 - 1960
Description

A strong and bright still life with red flowers in a rustic terracotta pot.

Paired with an interesting, particularly French object; a "Lampe Pigeon" - the non-exploding gas lamp invented by Charles Pigeon - the composition is an very modern take on trusty old-world country-style objects. This - and the fabulous use of reds by the artist - make the artwork both endearing and contemporary.

Signed and dated 1968 by Francois Depresle (born 1927), the oil on canvas measures 46 x 55 cm. It bears on the verso the artist's inventory number (593) and title in French "nature morte à la lampe pigeon". The overall framed size of the artwork is 57 x 67 cm. Depresle was a French artist who was active in Paris and in Normandy.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French modernist floral still lifes often combine traditional subject matter with expressive palette knife techniques, textured impasto, and simplified forms influenced by mid-20th-century artistic movements.

Mid-20th-century artwork typically utilises oil paint mixed with organic pigments and binders, applied with brushes or palette knives onto stretched linen or cotton canvas.

Identification involves examining artist signatures, checking for age-appropriate surface craquelure or varnish oxidisation, assessing stretchers and canvas weave, and inspecting gallery labels on the reverse.

A modernist still life can serve as a central element placed above a sideboard or console table, paired with muted wall tones and textured ceramic vessels to complement its palette.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and heat sources, and dust gently using a soft, dry brush while avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths.
