Rare, Early Sheraton Shell Inlaid Mahogany Banjo Barometer First Period By Walter Gough, London. Circa 1785

This is an original barometer in excellent condition, for the discerning collector.
 
This is a lovely example of a late 18th Century barometer that has good colour and is in great condition.
 
The substantial solid case with well-figured mahogany veneer, having a swan-necked pediment with ivory paterae and centre ball finial. Above a waisted trunk that houses an adjustable hygrometer with turning knob, mercurial thermometer glazed box with hinged door and embellished with oval fan inlay and edge, alternating stringing. The circular centre having a silvered and engraved, eight inch diameter dial that bears the maker''s signature ''Walt(e)r Gough. No. 21 Middle Row Holborn''. Also, the rare feature of a well-turned, Sheraton style, glazed wooden bezel that is hinged and fitted with a lock. Both the setting and the reading hands are of ''Arrowhead'' style the latter being counterpoised.
